Free VoIP with Skype
One of the ways I save money is with the use of free Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) software to make computer-to-computer (free) and computer-to-telephone (two cents a minute) calls. The software that I use is Skype.
The reason that I chose Skype over say the Gizmo Project wasn’t one where I went out and researched and picked the best one. It all boiled down to popularity. A popularity that as it turned out was because Skype is superior in quality and ease of setup and use.
I buy SkypeOut credits mainly to speak to family members. Especially my mother. At two-cents a minute Skype beats, hands down, any long distance company I care to choose to use. I just wish my mother and most of my family members were computer savvy, then it would be even cheaper! 
When I started using Skype I didn’t even have a descent headset. I went to WalMart and found a very cheap one, a Logitech Premium Stereo Headset. I don’t remember the exact price, but I think it was something like $21+7% sales tax.
You might also be able to find at your local WalMart cheaper VoIP phones than you can get from Skype directly. The phones are easy to hookup to a computer via a free USB port. I saw a few but since I really didn’t need one, I went with the cheaper headset—besides that, I also use the headset to listen to TV in bed and not bug my wife!
