Welcome to Debt Stupid!

Why name my debt blog Debt Stupid? Because that is exactly what I was. So it is a fitting reminder of where I was and where I am headed. Hopefully, this means I am heading into debt savvy. Or as close to it as I can possibly get. :)

How I got into debt is a long story that goes back years. My debt ballooned more recently, in the past 5-years, when I used three high interest rate credit cards to construct half of my house. Yes, I have been paying the minimum all this time… I know, I should be shot!

I ballooned my debt to over $22,000 dollars. The reason I used my credit cards was because I already had a mortgage and it was difficult for me to get another one. There were several reasons for this. One, the money that I was earning where I moved to was not enough for the additional debt of another mortgage (even though I was not paying my mortgage, my brother was) and two, the property where I am constructing our house is not ours, although it will be one day when we inherit it. Not being segregated land makes it a big problem and will be a lot more expensive to mortgage. It can be mortgaged but that will mean segregating, etc.; you get the drift.

So… credit cards to the rescue! Until I started to get the bills.

I have recently started to attack my credit card debt with everything I can. From moving what money I can into the lowest interest rate card and paying over the minimum on the highest interest rate cards.

Although I wish to remain anonymous (I only give my first name) I will chronicle my adventure into becoming debt free on this blog. This idea is not new, plenty of people are doing it. I liked the idea so much I decided to join in.
